General

UConsulting is a student-run undergraduate business organization at the University of California, Los Angeles specializing in professional development in the field of management consulting. Founded in 2016, UConsulting has positioned itself to promote professional success in its members and to the greater UCLA community through professional workshops, case competitions, a strong network of alumni, and connections to leading firms. Currently, we have over 50 active members who are pursuing a variety of majors. From Business Economics to MIMG to Cognitive Science, while academic interests vary from individual to individual, all UConsulting members possess the drive in fiercely producing professional success in themselves and in those around them.
First, students should sign up to our mailing list (at the bottom of this page) to receive updates on any and all UConsulting-related events and information. The club provides a variety of external events for the UCLA community, including but not limited to case workshops, alumni panels, networking sessions, and professional development workshops. If you are not a student or would like to otherwise support our club’s presence, we accept donations at our UCLA donations page.
UConsulting’s operations mirror the quarter system established by the school. Thus, our project, leadership, and recruitment cycles all roughly follow a 10-week model. From the perspective of a newly recruited member, UConsulting first works to hone the skills and analytical abilities of their Interns through the Accelerator program. Once complete, new Analysts can then join projects and committees to further acquaint themselves with weekly operations. These committees brainstorm, plan, and execute events ranging from new member recruitment and case workshops to socials and retreats.

Recruitment

Our founders established UConsulting to bring the most driven and capable students at UCLA together to provide a valuable asset to the school community and to the greater professional world. Their opinion then, and our opinion now, is that this experience should not be limited to those with extensive business experience or recruitment-ready resumes in Fall quarter of one’s freshman year. That said, we want to see individuals with a thirst for experience and a passion for consulting and solving difficult problems. We want to see individuals who have gone above-and-beyond in some way in their professional, academic, and personal lives.

We have found that successful applicants generally possess profound analytical skills and a strong ability to communicate complex ideas succinctly, and coherently. More generally, we are searching for individuals who bond well with existing members and who we believe possess the ability to further strengthen the mission of our club, other members, and the UCLA community.
We typically begin our recruitment cycles with a case workshop in coordination with a corporate partner. There, you will learn some basic techniques for tackling case interviews. Please refer to our recruitment page if interested. Case interviews are a foreign concept to most undergraduate students to the point that very few UConsulting members had case experience prior to their UConsulting case interview. While daunting and seemingly abstract, these interviews represent condensed models of our client engagements and act as an important element in our understanding of each applicant’s problem solving and communication abilities. As such, we will provide all applicants with suitable study materials prior to coffee chats. In the meantime, we recommend doing some online research to understand the basic flow of the interview, how to approach both qualitative and quantitative cases, and how to synthesize your findings. Running through practice cases and mental math problems will always benefit your progress. Moreover, should you advance to the final round, we will be pairing you up with a UConsulting “Buddy,” who will help you with mock cases and answer any questions you may have.
We do not establish a defined number of spots per cycle. We do make considerations based on the total size of the applicant pool and the number of graduating seniors; however, if we believe you are qualified and are successful throughout the recruitment process, we won’t hesitate to extend you an invitation to the Accelerator program.
While consulting is most of our members’ primary focus, the club hosts many individuals seeking to pursue careers such as investment banking, finance, project management, technology, and medicine. Our mission and operations clearly reveal the appeal and value to future consultants through its alumni network, project experience, and dedicated training.

For non-consultants, however, the value of UConsulting can be less apparent. We believe that being a successful consultant is not solely a product of extensive business knowledge or even knowledge of the consulting industry in general. We teach our members to become expert problem solvers, to approach uncharted waters with the confidence that they have previous experience confronting knowledge barriers and overcoming them to become experts in a given field in a relatively short matter of time. UConsulting hopes to evoke consistent patterns of initiative and a thirst for knowledge by the time every member is ready to enter the professional space. Thus, the value proposition to our non-consultants varies from that of our future consultants; however, the career-agnostic skillset developed through engagement in consulting practices will lead to future success in any career you may have in mind!
